“It’s kind of just a vehicle to release my own music, and I don’t really have bigger plans for it at the Flamingo American flag flAmerica patriotic 4th of july shirt but in fact I love this moment,” says Rodriguez of the move. “The goal was really just to be able to do what I wanted.” While there’s been a steep learning curve, in the two years since she established Major Arcana, Rodriguez has learned both when to lean into her strengths and when it’s more sensible to delegate. “I think it’s important for artists to understand the music industry, but there’s a certain point where I can say, ‘Oh, this is above my head.’ And luckily, I have people I work with that can help me there.” One area in which Rodriguez needed no help, however, was finding inspiration for the EP. After the end of her most recent relationship, she decided to ship herself off to Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, a sprawling, hacienda-like complex set in lush greenery minutes from the Rio Grande. “It’s insane—it’s truly one of the most magical places in the world,” Rodriguez says. There, she wrote 22 songs in two weeks, with some making their way onto the Save Me EP. (Others she’s keeping in her back pocket for the next album.) “I decided to do an EP because these songs feel like a continuation of the previous record, but they don’t feel exactly like my next record either,” she explains. “It represents a middle point for me, really. 2021 was just me in and out of studios, writing and trying to figure everything out in my life, like a kind of therapy.”

To bring the Flamingo American flag flAmerica patriotic 4th of july shirt but in fact I love this songs to life, she reunited with two of her most trusted collaborators, the maverick avant-pop producers Jim-E Stack and BJ Burton. “I think when you work with people and you have a great creative flow, it brings things out of you that you wouldn’t be able to do alone,” says Rodriguez. “That’s the beauty of collaboration, really. It’s just an energy in the room, and a lot of these songs came together almost instantly—we would write them in like 30 minutes. Then there’s making the production sound great, which is the rest of the work. But I love that because it means they all have such an immediate feeling.” Rodriguez hopes to translate that sense of immediacy into her live performances too, having worked with a choreographer for the first time in her career. “Obviously we can’t choreograph the whole 45-minute set front to back, but we started working on these specific movements that were almost like manifestations of the lyrics,” she adds. “It means I can bring that feeling of liberation and empowerment and energy I felt in the studio onto the stage, which feels amazing.”
