“Weaving is such an amazing way of doing it because it acknowledges T-shirts as a raw material,” Capone says. “Textile has this unique property that it’s pliable and can have many lives. It can continue to be washed, dyed, torn apart and reconstructed into something new. I don’t believe in textile waste. There’s no need for it to be discarded. This is a familiar thing of a potholder loom, but jumbo.” What do you do with an 18-inch woven square? McMahon and Capone have several ideas. “We went right to making upholstery patterns,” McMahon, ever the Los angeles Dodgers strong cat mom shirt and I love this furniture designer, says. “It could also become a jacket or a sweater, or weighted blankets, or rugs.” There is a long, global precedent for creative approaches to upcycling discarded garments through weaving: In the Philippines, for example, discarded textiles are woven into doormats known as basahan that are found in most homes. In recent years, companies like Rags2Riches have been innovating on the traditional technique.

They will launch a How To booklet and video to allow people in Hudson Valley to create these woven textiles en masse, producing material that can then be used by LikeMindedObjects. “During something like a pandemic, or if you can’t work outside your home because of childcare, you can take the loom home,” she explains. “We’ve partnered with them on creating this education format, where we can train people to weave our products. There’s the loom as a product and then there’s the product creation that will be sold straight from the studio which will be the chairs, jackets, and weighted blankets.”
